How to create a WiFi QR code
Enter your network name (SSID) exactly as it appears in your device's WiFi settings, select the correct security type, enter your password, and click Generate WiFi QR Code. Download the result as a PNG for digital use or as an SVG for printing. Place the printed code anywhere guests might need to connect - on a table card, a welcome sign, a menu, or a door.
What is a WiFi QR code?
A WiFi QR code encodes network credentials - the network name, password, and security type - into a scannable image. When a phone camera reads the code, the device automatically prompts the user to join the network without them needing to find the network in a list or type a password. The format used is the standard WIFI:T:WPA;S:...;P:...;H:false;; string, which is supported natively by iOS 11+ and Android 10+.
Is it safe to share a WiFi QR code?
A WiFi QR code contains your network password in encoded form. Anyone who scans it - or reads the raw data from the image - can retrieve the password. For a guest network that you rotate regularly, this is low risk. For your primary home or office network, consider creating a separate guest SSID with a different password, then generating the QR code for that network only.
Your password is never sent to any server by this tool. All encoding happens in your browser. The generated image is a local data URL that never leaves your device unless you explicitly save or share it.
Where should I display a WiFi QR code?
Common placement locations include table cards or tent cards in cafés and restaurants, welcome cards in Airbnb and hotel rooms, reception desks and waiting areas, conference room screens or whiteboards, and home router areas for guests. Laminating a printed code protects it from wear and keeps it scannable for years without needing replacement.
What size should a WiFi QR code be?
For a table card or desk display viewed at arm's length, a print size of 4 cm × 4 cm is comfortable. For a wall sign viewed from one metre away, 8 cm × 8 cm is the minimum. Use the QR Print Size Checker to verify your dimensions against the expected scanning distance before sending to print.
SVG or PNG - which format should I download?
Download SVG for any printed output. SVG is a vector format and scales to any dimensions without pixelation, from a small sticker to an A3 poster. Download PNG if you are embedding the code in a website, digital menu, presentation, or email. The PNG is generated at 512 × 512 pixels, which is sufficient for most digital and small print applications.
Frequently asked questions
Is this WiFi QR code generator free?
Yes, completely free. There are no usage limits, no account required, and no hidden charges. You can generate as many WiFi QR codes as you need at no cost.
Is my WiFi password safe when I use this tool?
Yes. Your password never leaves your device. All QR code generation happens entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server, logged, or stored anywhere. You can verify this by disconnecting from the internet and the tool will work identically.
Which security type should I choose - WPA or WEP?
Choose WPA for virtually all modern routers. WPA covers WPA, WPA2, and WPA3, which are the standards used by routers made in the last 15 years. Only choose WEP if you are connecting to an old legacy device that you know uses WEP encryption. If your network has no password, choose "No password (open network)".
What does the "hidden network" option do?
When a WiFi network is set to hidden, the router does not broadcast its name (SSID) publicly. Devices cannot see it in their list of available networks. Enabling the hidden network option in this tool adds a flag to the QR code that tells the device to actively search for the network by name rather than waiting to see it broadcast. Only enable this if your router is actually configured to hide its SSID.
Will the QR code work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes. Both iOS 11 and later and Android 10 and later support WiFi QR code scanning natively through the built-in camera app. On older Android devices, a QR code scanner app may be required.
Can I print this WiFi QR code?
Yes. Download the SVG version for print - it is resolution-independent and will be sharp at any size, from a small card to a large poster. The PNG version (512 × 512 pixels) is suitable for digital display and smaller prints. For placement on a wall or table, a minimum print size of 2 cm × 2 cm is recommended.
Do I need to regenerate the QR code if I change my WiFi password?
Yes. The WiFi password is encoded directly into the QR code. If you change your router password, you will need to generate a new QR code with the updated credentials and replace any printed copies.
What happens if someone scans the QR code but is out of range?
The scan will succeed - the device will read the network credentials - but the connection attempt will fail if the network is not in range. The device will typically save the network and connect automatically the next time it is within range.
