How to generate a barcode label sheet

Enter your barcode values in the text area, one per line. Select the barcode format that matches your application and the label sheet layout that matches your label stock. Click Print Sheet to open the layout directly in a print dialog, or Download HTML to save a print-ready file you can open and print later.

The layout is sized in millimetres to match the physical label sheet precisely. When printing, ensure your printer is set to 100% scale with no fit-to-page scaling. One millimetre out will cause labels to be misaligned from the third or fourth row onwards.

Choosing the right label layout

Avery 5160 (3×10, 30 labels per sheet) is the most commonly used label sheet format in North America and is widely available in office supply stores. The labels are 1 inch tall and 2⅝ inches wide - a good size for short serial numbers, asset tags, and inventory codes. Avery 5163 (2×5, 10 labels per sheet) provides larger labels suited to shipping, where the barcode must be readable from a greater distance or includes longer text. The A4 3×8 layout is the European equivalent of the Letter 3×10, using the same nominal label dimensions on A4 paper.

Printing tips

  • Always print at 100% - never use "fit to page" or "shrink to fit"
  • Do a test print on plain paper first and hold it against your label sheet to check alignment
  • Use the correct paper size in the browser print dialog - Letter for Avery templates, A4 for the A4 layout
  • Check browser margins are set to zero or "none" in the print dialog
  • For laser printers, allow the sheet to cool before handling - heat can warp the label adhesive
  • Scan a printed proof barcode before committing to a full print run

Frequently asked questions

How do I print barcode labels with this tool?

Enter your barcode values - one per line - select the barcode format and the label sheet layout that matches your label stock, then click Print Sheet. A print-ready page opens in a new tab sized to your chosen layout. Use Ctrl+P (or Cmd+P on Mac) to send it to your printer. Make sure your printer is set to the correct paper size (US Letter or A4) with no scaling or fit-to-page - print at 100% actual size.

What label stock is compatible?

The layouts are designed to match Avery label sheet specifications. Avery 5160 is a widely available 3×10 layout of 30 labels on US Letter stock, commonly found in office supply stores. Avery 5161 and 5163 are wider label layouts on the same Letter stock. The A4 option is for the common European A4 3×8 label sheet format. You can also use compatible generic label stock that matches the same dimensions.

Which barcode format should I use for my labels?

Use Code 128 unless you have a specific reason for another format. It is the most compact, supports all alphanumeric characters, and is read by virtually every barcode scanner. Use Code 39 if you are in an industry or using an older system that requires it (automotive, defence, legacy inventory). Use EAN-13 for retail product labels. Use UPC-A for retail products sold primarily in North America.

Can I generate labels for more than one sheet?

Yes. If you enter more values than fit on a single sheet, the tool generates multiple sheets in the same print file. For example, entering 35 barcodes with the Avery 5160 layout (30 per sheet) produces two pages - 30 on the first and 5 on the second. The second page will have empty cells where no barcodes were assigned.

Why are some barcodes showing as invalid on the label sheet?

EAN-13 requires exactly 12 digits (the tool adds the check digit to make 13). UPC-A requires exactly 11 digits. Code 39 only allows uppercase letters, digits, and a limited set of symbols. If your input does not meet these requirements, the affected label shows an error message instead of a barcode. Code 128 accepts any printable text and will not show errors for valid character input.

How do I print at exactly the right size?

In your browser print dialog, set the scale to 100% (also labelled "Actual size" or "No scaling") and disable any "fit to page" option. Also confirm the paper size matches the sheet layout you chose - Letter (8.5" × 11") for Avery layouts or A4 (210mm × 297mm) for the A4 layout. Printing at the wrong scale is the most common reason labels do not align with the label sheet.

Can I add text or a product name to each label?

This tool generates barcode-only labels for simplicity and print accuracy. For labels that also include product names, prices, or other text fields, you would need a dedicated label design application such as Bartender, ZebraDesigner, or NiceLabel, which allow you to design label templates and merge data from a spreadsheet.

What is the HTML download for?

The HTML download saves the print-ready label sheet as a local file. You can open it in any browser and print it directly, share it with a colleague, or keep it as a record of what was printed. The file is self-contained - it includes all barcode SVGs inline and does not require an internet connection to open or print.
